    • I will be all the week in #Aveyron (#France) for #Wat18, the biggest French Travel Blogger summit. Before meeting travel agencies and tourism offices from all over the world, we start the summit by discovering the region where we gathered. I have been invited by #VillefrancheDeRouergue to discover the fortified towns of Aveyron, among them  #Najac (picture), one of the most beautiful village in France (and in the world). Thank you @najac_villefranche_tourisme for surprising us and make us discover Aveyron from the skies !

    • The snow festival of #Sapporo (Yuki Matsuri) is one of the most popular in #Japan during winter. It began in 1950 with 6 high school students ; nowadays, the fancy ice sculptures attract more than two millions visitors in a single week. Some are very impressive - more than 15m tall - but, to be honest, I have been quite disappointed by this festival. I hardly found any sculptures that did not have any kind of sponsoring and, to me, it looked more like a gigantic advertising show than art exhibition. Maybe I'm too French.

    • Kazuo-san was driving me to his favourite ramen shop when we stumbled upon wild deers in #Hokkaido. There were 30-40 of them and when we saw them, we just couldn't believe what we were seeing - frozen in astonishment, I had 0,1 second to grab my camera and take a (bad) picture.  In Hokkaido, #wildlife is everywhere ... And I am particularly fond of those white tiny butts.

    • In #Noboribetsu (#Hokkaido), I saw the most #WTF show ever: Hot Spring Splashing Battle at #SengenPark. Imagine 100 Japanese (men AND women) dressed in #fundoshi - the traditional Japanese undergarment for adult males, which looks like a big diaper with a thong. Imagine them outside, during a cold night (-15°C), dividing themselves between two teams. Then, you see them preparing for #Kibasen ("cavalry fight") where three people carry a fourth one. Silence ... Until people start battling with hot water at each other until only one cavalry remains. Its team now has the honor of carrying a gigantic phallus carved into wood, under the "Hurrah!" of the crowd .. The victory of the red team means a temperature rise for the spring water whereas the victory of the white team implies an increase in spring volume - and, this year, the reds won. They eventually all leave, running barefoot on the snow and icy roads, probably ending the night with tons of Sake. #Japon #Japan #Hokkaido #tourismejapon #LeJaponUnAutreMonde #japonais #discoverjapan #traveljapan #travelinjapan #travel #travelblog #blogvoyage #blogdevoyage #voyage #visitjapanjp #undiscoveredjapan #enjoymyjapan #discoverjapan#exploringjapan #instatraveltrip #instavoyage #evasion #traveladdict #seetheworld #travelblog
    • Wild Japanese Tancho Cranes, in the Kushiro Marshland (#Kushiro Shitsugen) in #Hokkaido. They are among the rarest bird species - in fact, for a very long time, people thought the red-crowned cranes were extinct, because of overhunting and habitat destruction. However, 20 birds were found in 1926 near Kushiro. Conservation efforts led to a impressive recovery : there are now more than 1000 of those birds in #Japan (est. population worldwide : 2,750 in the wild). Those cranes - symbol of luck, longevity, and fidelity - are very important in #Japanese culture. Think about origamis: the most basic figure - the one everybody knows - is a crane. Think about the official logo of Japan Airlines #JAL.
If you want to see truly beautiful pictures of Tancho cranes dancing (during breeding season), you should look for #vincentmunier pictures. They are breathtaking.

    • Kazuo-san, 70 years old. He is Mayumi's husband (previous picture). Former aeronautical engineer, he now spends his time flyfishing, wood boat carving (one boat = one year work) - and eating ramens. In fact, he was so enthusiastic about them that he drove for one hour on slippery, dangerous mountain roads to bring me to his favourite ramen shop - a tiny, secret place in the middle of the mountains, between Lake Mashu and Lake Kussharo. And the taste was, indeed, fantastic.
In #Japan, I was astonished by the number of old Japanese people still working, part-time or full-time, even after being 70 or even 80 years old. According to him, there are many reasons for that (small incomes, debts, loyalty to the company ...) but the main one is ... boredom. "They have no passion, no hobby in their life. So, they work" he claimed. I didn't really know what to think about that.

    • So, this is Mayumi. She was my #AirBnb hostess in Lake #Akan - and one of the most interesting people I met in #Hokkaido. Like many Japanese women, she stopped working when she began to have children - and spent all her life taking care of her three daughters. Two of them now have babies as well, and stopped working as soon as they had their daughters ... Then, five years ago, Mayumi divorced and remarried with someone who share her passion : flyfishing (Hokkaido is a paradise for flyfishers, especially if you like rainbow trouts). There would be many things to say about why she chose to be a housewife, but I have the feeling I would betray her words if I began to sum up her feelings. Let's just say that you will never truly understand feminism in Japan unless you are a Japanese woman.

    • So, this is Lake Mashū (摩周湖 Mashū-ko), said to be the most beautiful #lake in #Japan - and the prettiest I've ever seen in my whole life. The lake is one of the clearest in the world and one of the deepest in Japan - and is surrounded by tons of legends and myths.
By the way, you see that #blue color ? I didn't edit the picture: that, is its exact true color, 100% #nofilter (apart from the polarizing filter on the lens for the sky). This natural blue is really famous in Japan - caused by some special light reflection due to sun, snow, ice (the lake is frozen on the right) and its very peculiar transparency.

    • So, this is me, walking on drift ice on the shore of #Shiretoko ("The end of the Earth" in Ainu) peninsula, in #Hokkaido. There is something magical in walking on a frozen sea at the foot of dozens of volcanoes (yeah: those mountains on the background are active volcanoes). This is the most savage place in #Japan - realm of Ussuri brown bears, red foxes, sika deers, salmons and  whales. You can climb 12 peaks from which you might stare at the whole Hokkaido island, the Pacific Ocean, the Okhotsk sea, the Aleutian islands, Sakhaline, Kamtchatka and even frakking Siberia in the same time (!) if the weather allows it.
